Our classroom community members have been working hard in science, math, language arts, social studies, and art. Today and tomorrow we have an opportunity, through Parent Conferences, to show you our work and progress.
Please do your best to be at the school at least 5-10 minutes before your interview, so that we can begin our 15 minute conversation promptly. Thank you again to all the parents and guardians who have signed up to meet with us and we look forward to our visit. It is that time again when we introduce new root words for the coming two weeks. The words we will be focusing on are:
Over the next two weeks we will be searching for, using, and writing these root words. We have also identified the following challenge words that we have built from our root words:
Students will be writing their chosen challenge words in their agenda to share with you at home. Please support your child in looking for these root words in other larger words over the next two weeks as you read books at home, drive and read street signs, and learn using electronic technologies. We look forward to increasing our verbal and written vocabulary using these words. $$ Money $$ As part of our math skill development we will be learning about two new topics in math. The first topic is money, focusing on learning the names and value of dimes, nickels, and pennies. While students will learn the names and value of all the coins in later grades, in grade two we focus on the introductory coins: dimes, nickels, and pennies. This focus on money will help us build our number sense and patterns and relations, as we continue learn how to add and subtract by 1, 5, and 10's to 100 using money as real life tools. Ordinal Numbers The second topic of focus will be ordinal numbers. These include recognizing, writing, and speaking the following numbers: We will be learning the numerical value of these ten numbers (first to tenth), their order and position, as well as their connection to cardinal numbers. For example: first is the same as the number 1, which is the same as the word one.
We are looking forward to expaning our math number sense, patterns and relations, and reasoning skills using these numbers and tools. As we learn about water, it is important to understand how it moves as part of the cycles of the earth. We will be learning about the water cycle through scientific questions, writing, drawings, and music.
Today we learned challenge words such as:
Our ability to read, explain, and draw a representation of these words is important as we work hard to understand them. We also learned a new song with lyrics and a rap beat in order to understand the water cycle. Here is a link to the song that we practiced in class today. The Water Cycle Rap (link to the song) Ask your child about the water cycle and feel free to sing the song together! ![]() As part of our science curriculum we are going to explore liquids, hot and cold temperatures, and buoyancy and boats. As an introduction to these ideas we are asking the question: What Is The Story With Water? Our first few conversations about water will include questions, such as:
In exploring these ideas, grade two students will more fully understand the scientific properties of water and the importance of water in our lives and as part our environment. We will also explore non-fiction and fiction stories about different forms of water, including snow, ice, hail, rain, and sleet. This will give us the opportunity to learn from the stories of published authors, which will support us as we generate and write stories of our own. In turn, we will move into Social Studies and focus on the role water plays in communities across Canada, and for communities as part of Canada's history. We will continue to use water and the art of story telling to learn about Inuit, Acadian, and prairie communities in Canada.
We look forward to taking this journey of learning with your children! |
