We are moving across Canada as learners to a new area of the country, the easter provinces or the Maritimes. In particular we will be learning about the province of Nova Scotia, and the town of Meteghan. As we learn about this part of Canada, we will be comparing it to the quality of life, landscape, animals, weather, and people that we learned about while we studied Nunavut. We will be learning about the present quality of life and learn about the history of the people in Nova Scotia, focusing on Acadian communities. All of our inquiry questions, learning, and work will continue to be connected to our larger grade two community question: what is the story with water? Focusing on how water in the form of oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, and weather shape and influence the quality of life in Eastern Canada.
We are excited to learn more about Canada! This week we began making boats in class. Our goals included taking the knowledge we have learned about objects that float and sink to see if each student could create a boat that could float then carry a load. We each received the same supplies to make our boat: a sheet of paper, tin foil, a plastic cup, and a ball of plasticine. We planned our boats through drawings and writing. With the additional help of glue and tape the following day we made our boats using our plans and supplies. Then our classroom community spent time each day floating individual boats in water, and adding tiles in groups of 5 and 10 (to practice our skip counting), and assess the size of the load (mass or weight) each boat could carry.
1.) My boat carried _____ tiles.
2.) I think my boat worked because... 3.) I think I could make a better boat by... In answering such questions, we will be ready to make another boat, and the goal with our second boat will be how far we can make our boat travel in water. Thank you for reading! - Fantastic boat makers of Edgemont School We heard at our Celebration of Learning from parents that they would like to ask us powerful questions about what we are learning at school. We are going to post weekly questions that you could ask us about our school work each week.
We will post these questions every Thursday or Friday. Please stay tuned for our weekly questions. Community Question: We have given each other PUT-UP's to support anti-bullying day. Please ask me what a PUT-UP is and ask me give one to each family member. Science Question: What objects that you took to school floated or sank in the water? Physical Education Question: We are excited to have Mission Impossible in our gym this week (thank you Ms. Vahaaho). Ask me how I am doing as a mission spy. Social Questions: We made a tapestry of Inuit-Nunangat (or Nunavut). Ask me what Inuit-Nunangat means. Ask me how the tapestry is connected to the Inuit people, their land, water, and culture. We are excited to have conversations with you! We will create more questions next week. Amazing Students and Awesome Teacher of Room 5 :) |
