As we continue to learn about bugs, we have been studying and drawing bugs. In particular we can identify and draw different body parts including: thorax, abdomen, antennae, compound eyes, leg segments, and stingers. This week we will be creating nature based bugs using pieces of nature we will bring into our classroom. We are asking students to bring in a variety of leaves, small sticks, small acorns, small berries, and small rocks with which to create three dimensional bugs. Here is an example of the work we will be completing: Please have these items to school by Thursday morning, October 15 so we can make bugs in time for Parent Teacher conferences on October 15 and 16.
Please bring enough pieces of nature so students can make three different types of bugs (each child will decide what her/his bugs will look like). Thank you for your support! (Image take from Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/137500594846018438/) Our words to know for the next two weeks are:
Remember, students will be learning and working with these words in class to the point where they should be able to spell them independently by late October. At home you can talk about these words, practice identifying them in books, are practice spelling them. The Extra Big Word students should be able to recognize and sound out but are not required to spell independently. Happy learning! At this time students and parents will know that we are focusing on asking questions about honeybees. We are developing questions that we want to answer in order to become better researchers and learners. Focusing on the work and importance of honeybees will increase our scientific knowledge, improve our reading comprehension, boost our writing skills, and even advance our knowledge of math.
As the grade 2 team researched the honeybee we learned that the average honeybee is the size of a regular size paper clip (approximately 3 centimeters). Then our creative and collective brains began work faster.
These types of questions have led us to request that each family in grade 2 send a box of 100 paper clips with their child to school. These paper clips are regular size (about 3 centimeters in length) and would be of great assistance to our classroom and project. If you have already sent in a box, THANK YOU! If you are wondering if it is too late, it is not. We are still accepting paperclips during the month of October. We will keep you posted about the work we complete using our fantastic paper clip bees. THANK YOU!!! |
